This photo was taken by a U.S. Army Signal Corps photographer in the village of St. Marcouf, France (near Utah Beach) on 8 June 1944, two days after D-Day.

In the photo paratroopers of the 101st Airborne Division hold a Nazi flag captured by the defeat of the German units holding St. Marcouf. There is also a German helmet on the ground just in front of the flag. This is a real event very similar to depiction in "Band of Brothers ."

The 4th face from the left has been identified as Len Griffing, 501st Parachute Infantry Regiment.
