This photograph was taken near Bologna, Italy on the morning of 14 April 1945. The photo shows soldiers and mules of the 10th Mountain Division with an M-4 Sherman tank.

Created in 1942, the 10th Mountain Division was a special unit (in Italy, part of the U.S. Fifth Army), trained to fight on skis like similar units in European armies. They trained in Colorado and Alaska before being committed to the ETO for the winter of 1944-1945. Their toughness and military success has become an enduring legend.

Today in WW II: 11 Sep 1944 Following Operation DRAGOON, US Seventh Army links up with Patton's Third Army west of Dijon, France, creating a solid wall of Allied forces stretching from Antwerp, Holland to the Swiss border.  More
