This photo was taken by a U.S. Marine Corps photographer on Iwo Jima Red Beach No. 1 during the invasion of the island on 19 February 1945. It shows Marines of the 5th Division as they inch their way up the sand slope of the beach under intense fire. Living and dead Marines and their equipment are bunched at the bottom of the slope.

Today in WW II: 16 Aug 1944 Canadian troops secure Falaise, still 15 miles north of US XV Corps, a gap that permitted large numbers of German troops to escape to the east from the Battle of the Falaise Pocket.
