US Army Backpack Sprayer

US Army Backpack Sprayer

The "Backpack Sprayer" or "Knapsack-type Sprayer" was developed by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers during World War II. Its primary use was for spraying DDT solution for mosquito abatement in tropical areas.

In amphibious operations, spray teams went ashore with headquarters units and began fly and mosquito control work as early as possible. Trenches and pit latrines were sprayed as well as dwelling areas.
