The SCR-299, originally conceived as a radiotelephone good for '100 miles in motion,' proved to have surprisingly long ranges, in the hundreds and thousands of miles when used in radiotelegraph operation on sky waves radiated from the usual whip antenna or from a directional antenna array which could be set up quickly in any more or less fixed situation. In Oran, Algeria, an SCR-299 maintained contact over the long distance to England, with little atmospheric interruption.
