M1028 Truck, Cargo, Tactical, 1 1/4 Ton, 4x4 Chevrolet CUCV

The M1028 cargo truck is a model of the M10xx Chevy Commercial Utility Cargo Vehicles (CUCV) series of trucks. The linked page provides more information on the general characteristics of the Chevrolet CUCV trucks, varaints and kits, and a directory of links to Olive-Drab.com pages for other models of the series.

The M1028 CUCV and its variants are light commercial trucks with a pick-up body, with military modifications, designed to provide standard tactical mobility and to carry the S-250 electronics/communications shelter. The M1028 and its variants are derived from the M1008 Truck, Cargo, Tactical, 1 1/4 Ton, 4x4 pick-up truck but with upgrades including a heavier rear suspension with an overload leaf spring. There is no visual distinction between the M1008 and the M1028 series trucks, except for dual wheel models.

The nomenclature and features of the M1028 variants are:

Engine GM (Detroit Diesel) 379 cu in. (6.2L) J-series non-emissions diesel V-8 engine, 135hp@3600rpm
Transmission GM TH400 (Turbo Hydramatic 400) automatic transmission with 3 forward and 1 reverse speeds
Transfer Case Manual NP208, except NP205 on M1028A1 and M1028A2. The NP205 has a Power Take-Off capability to use engine power for auxiliary equipment.
Axles All axles full floating. Front axle on all variants is Dana 60 with Spicer Trac-lok (limited slip) and locking hubs, ratio: 4.56:1.
Rear axle on M1028 and A1: 10.5 inch Corporate 14 Bolt with "No-spin/Detroit" differential locker.
Rear axle on M1028A2 and A3: Dana 70HD, w/ Detroit Locker, Ratio: 4.56:1, Ratio: 4.56:1
