Korea USMC Withdrawal from Chosin Reservoir, 1950

Korea USMC Withdrawal from Chosin Reservoir, 1950

This photo was taken during the Korean War by a U.S. Marine Corps photographer 29 November 1950 on the road from Yudam-ni near the Chosin Reservoir in North Korea. Along this road, the U.S.M.C. staged their fighting withdrawal in the face of overwhelming odds from Chinese Army forces injected into the Korean War a few days earlier. Despite the six to one mismatch in numbers, and brutal sub-zero weather conditions, the Marines decimated the Chinese and emerged as intact units that went on to fight again.

The Marines in this photo are identified as from the 5th and 7th Regiments, 1st Marine Division.
