This undated World War II photo was taken by a U.S. Army Signal Corps photographer in the India-Burma border area. From the original caption: "Two United States Army nurses carry heavy combat packs on a eight-mile hike through the jungle as part of their training before taking up front-line war assignments. Before reporting for duty the American nurses learn how to combat jungle hazards and how to care both for themselves and their patients under all conditions."

Today in WW II: 21 Jan 1942 Rommel's second offensive drives the British 8th Army back almost 300 miles, halting on 4 Feb between Gazala and Bir Hacheim, 30 miles west of Tobruk, Libya.
