This is a U.S. Navy/Department of Defense photograph of the nuclear submarine USS Los Angeles (SSN-688). The photo was taken as the Los Angeles shows its tremendous power by churning up a huge wake during training maneuvers off the coast of Singapore in July 2001.

Los Angeles was the 109th nuclear powered submarine, the 67th of the attack submarine fleet, and the 4th US Navy ship to be named after the City of Los Angeles. She was the lead submarine for a then-new class of high-speed attack submarines. Her keel was laid on 8 January 1972 at the Newport News Shipbuilding and Drydock Company in Norfolk, VA and she was launched there on 6 April 1974
