M983 Truck, Tractor: 10-Ton, 8x8

The M983 Truck, Tractor: 10-Ton, 8x8 with Crane is one of the US Military family of Heavy Expanded Mobility Tactical Trucks (HEMTT). General information about the HEMTT series is found on the linked page.

As described in TM 9-2320-279-10-1, the HEMTT M983 is a tractor vehicle with 100,000-lb (45 400 kg) GCWR, equipped with fifth wheel and kingpin. The kingpin is 2 in. (51mm) on the M983 w/crane and 3.5 in. (89mm) on the M983 w/o crane.

The M983 tractor is used to transport trailer-mounted Pershing II and Patriot missile systems. A Patriot launching battery typically has eight launching stations, each mounted on an M860 semitrailer towed by an M983 HEMTT.
