The M103 was introduced in the 1950s as a base for trailers matched to the M-series trucks with 9:00x20 tires. The M103A3 (introduced in 1977) was equipped with dual line air/hydraulic brakes, an improvement over the single line of earlier variants. A mechanical parking brake is provided along with an automatic emergency brake. The manual for the M103 trailer chassis is TM 9-8226 (April 1955) which covers all the 1 1/2 ton two wheel trailers of the time. TM 9-8226 was replaced by TM 9-2330-213-14&P. The October 1990 version supersedes TM 9-2330-213-14&P dated 30 September 1985.
