M310 Trailer, Cable Reel, 3 1/2-ton, 2-Wheel (G-813)

The M310 Trailer, Cable Reel, 3 1/2-ton , 2-Wheel was developed for the Signal Corps in World War II, originally designated the K37, then K37B. It is designed to be towed by a 2 1/2-ton 6x6 truck or similar vehicle equipped with an electrical connection and air-brake hose couplings. A cable reel spindle and two cable reel saddles are provided for hauling the cable reels. Bolsters and stanchions are also provided for hauling poles or other long materials after the cable reel saddles are removed.

The M310 Trailer can be towed on a hard surface roads carrying a rated highway payload of 7,000 pounds plus an additional overload of 2,100 pounds, provided that the speed of travel is limited to 45mph or less. The M310 Trailer can be towed on all types of roads, trails, and limited cross-country terrain with a payload of 7,000 pounds at a speed of 15mph or less. The trailer is capable of fording hard bottom water crossings including complete submersion.

The trailer has air/hydraulic brakes, controlled from the towing vehicle. Two parking brake levers, mounted on each side of the truss spreader, control the brakes to prevent the vehicle from rolling when parked. Trailer tail lights are supplied with electricity from, and controlled by, the towing vehicle.

This trailer was known as the K37 or K-37B when used by the Signal Corps during World War II. The V17A/MTQ telephone construction and maintenance truck was the prime mover. Following the war, the trailer was upgraded and standardized as the M-310. The trailer was manufactured by Highway Trailer Co. of Edgerton, WI.

The M310 Trailer, Cable Reel is identified by FSN 2330-395-1878. Manuals include TM 9-8236, superseded by TM 9-2330-218-14.
