Other Nations' Military Archives and Photo Sources

The Aerial Reconnaissance Archive from Keele University (UK) makes the aerial reconnaissance photographs, provided by the UK Ministry of Defence, accessible via the internet. During World War II, photgraphic reconnaissance played a major part in the intelligence war. The advanced photographic techniques developed, gave intelligence officers the ability to view the enemies activities in 3D, and make highly accurate assessments. Discover a new way of looking at that history through this website.

Archives Normandie 1939-1945 presents a collection of World War II photos from the U.S. National Archives and the National Archives of Canada. Many of the photos are from the time of Operation Overlord in June 1944, and subsequent events centered in Normandy, with a small number in color. The site is in French.

Australian War Memorial offers a fine photo archive with easy to use search facilities. Also available are databases of art, films, and sound records. The collections range from colonial wars, specifically The Sudan, up to and including the continuing peace-keeping operation in East Timor (and everything in between in which Australians have been involved).

BBC History website, World Wars section. Multimedia materials on World War II and other wars from the British perspective with many news photos.

Central Armed Forces Museum, Russia. Holds uniforms, banners, decorations and awards, documents, rare photos and personal belongings of leaders of the Russian Whites Armies: general Wrangel, general Alekseeff, general Skoblin, general Tourkul, general Drozdovsky, Cossacks ataman Semenoff, Cossacks general Zueff, baron Ungern von Sternberg etc. Collection of CAFM (including "Rodina" collection) and the non- government private Museum of the Russian White Guard, completed by the items from CAFM.

Other Nations' Military Websites

The British Defence Image Database is an official Ministry of Defence website. The database holds thousands of images which have been contributed by the Army, Royal Navy, RAF and MoD photographers.

The Canadian Department of National Defence Image Gallery has hi-res photos of current and past operations of Canadian Forces, their people and equipment.

This NATO site has a photo gallery from Operation Joint Endeavour (IFOR) in Bosnia.
